As part of our overall goal to make the web better for users, last year we announced a new project: to provide a community with Internet access more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have today. After a careful review, we’re very happy to announce that we will build our ultra high-speed network in Kansas City, Kansas. We’ve signed a development agreement with the city, and we’ll be working closely with local organizations, businesses and universities to bring a next-generation web experience to the community. Thank you to every community and individual that submitted a response, joined a rally, starred in a YouTube video or otherwise participated.

In my home studio I found that room treatment was the best upgrade I ever bought. I’m in the process of increasing the number of panels from 13 to 22, and this video shows the construction of one panel. I use a cheap, quick, simple technique, wrapping the compressed fiberglass in burlap without a frame or mounting hardware. OC703 is rigid enough to be self-supporting, and I can fit two panels snugly between the floor and my 8 foot ceiling. Please visit the Home Brewed Music blog at www.homebrewedmusic.com for more information on building broadband absorber panels like this. You can find a bill of materials and more details on the construction. There are also posts showing the layout of the panels in the room and frequency response measurements for different configurations.

Plan Aims to Expand Broadband Across US

VOALearningEnglish asked:

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com A newly released proposal calls for almost everyone in the United States to have high-speed Internet service at home within ten years. On March sixteenth the Federal Communications Commission sent its National Broadband Plan to Congress. The FCC wants one hundred million homes to have inexpensive Internet service at ten times current speeds. Another goal for twenty twenty is to have the fastest and most extensive wireless network of any nation. The United States invented the Internet. Yet a recent study placed it sixteenth in broadband access. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski says the service available is slow and costly compared with other developed countries. Currently, about two-thirds of Americans have broadband at home. But almost one hundred million do not. The government says fourteen million of them cannot get broadband even if they wanted it. The United States built a national highway system to expand transportation. Now President Obama says a similar effort is needed to expand broadband networks. His administration says expanding access is an economic development issue. Fast connections, it says, are important to business and job creation, and to other areas like education and health care. The government proposes to spend up to sixteen billion dollars on a wireless network for public safety agencies. Most Americans get broadband service through their cable television provider or
